I'm done with Dragon Ball Super because of a Racist Scene

Like most anime fans I was excited to see Dragon Ball Super premier July 15, 2015.  As a fan of the american dubs, I was pumped to see the series air first run uncut.  Then they took it there.  Black fans, hell any minority that watches anime knows what I mean when I say "they took it there".

Few people know this, but the Dragon Ball series has been a big supporter of racism.  The dubbing companies that rebrand and broadcast the show in America do a great job of editing out the perverted and racist content that in its original Japanese airing includes.

When I was in college, I wasn't aware of the content that was taken out until my roommate said that DragonBall is a very racist series.  Then he took me to a web page that showed Dragonball and Dragonball Z uncut.  The site showed images of Master Roshi pervert collection and characters that were minstrel, stereotypes or negative even given names like Mister Popo which translate to Mr. Evil not because he does bad deeds, it's because his skin is black. I was like wtf when I saw it.

Then I saw episode 2 of Dragon Ball Super and a scene where Vegeta gets covered in black ink, and he goes on a rant because he is black.  I was whoa it's 2015 and y'all going there again.  Grow up you bigots.  A large part of your fan base is minorities and we don't appreciate it when the show we love feels comfortable taking 15 seconds to put us down or point out that were are not liked by your culture.

Episodes 1-3 sucked to be honest, and I only watched it because I was a fan of the previous series. The show has Goku as a broke farmer that can't do anything but fight.  Mr. Satan gives Goku some money for saving the world against Buu, and Goku gives the money to Chi Chi then abandons his family to go train with King Kai.  Goten even says "Chi Chi is a money thirsty woman so if you take Mr. Satan's money and give it to her, then she'll let you abandon the family to go train with King Kai.

Then there was a part where Gohan is a poor scholar that can't even afford to buy his college books. His girlfriend Videl buys Gohan the books he needs and says, "it's okay you don't have money now because I'm the daughter of a rich  businessman that saved the world.  When you have enough knowledge from studying, then one day you can use it to get a job and take care of your family like my dad does."   The show is full of cattyness and cheap shots like that, and I wonder what's going on in the writer's table for the show.  In my opinion, the writers on Dragon Ball Super are killing the show and got some serious issues with minorities, woman and values.

I mean Dragon Ball is a great series that traditionally was known for good story and fighting scenes, but 15 seconds of unnecessary content just really ended my support of the series.  It saddens me that really one group of writers can go into the studio make a sketch for 15 seconds that should be cut out and really kill a show before it takes off.

I'm like "why would you do that and why was that necessary?  What was your point, and what were you trying to prove by doing that?  I feel like Japanese anime really lost face with that bigotry.  In 1989, I can understand the racism because Japan was closed off to the world and didn't have much exposure to diverse cultures, but in 2015 you know better.  Japan is suppose to known for it's intelligence and pioneers of peace.  I'm really disappointed to say the least.  I will no longer watch the series, and I encourage others to do the same.

  2. Not only in DB super but in DBZ as well. Toriyama didn't involve any black characters in the story. Not saying that's too horrible but when black characters were actually displayed on screen, they were very stereo typically drawn. They had big lips and some were drawn to resemble black face. Also one of the fighters from the World Martial Arts tournament (who was black) could hardly be understood as if a black person couldn't speak clearly. Not only that but Trunks and Goten disgusted themselves in what appears to be a KKK uniform when they fought together as Might Mask. This is completely offensive and I hope Toriyama is called out on this repeatedly.

    1. I'll admit that dragon ball had a lot of racist scenes but they were phased out a lot, not completely, in dbz. But this example is just proof people make everything seem racist. He wasn't mad because he was black, he was mad because he was sprayed by ink from an octopus. But then again dragon ball and dragon ball z were made in a time that just about everything had racists scenes.

  5. People who get all upset at something like a funny stereotypical drawing of a black dude are legit imbeciles. It's not racist to stereotype.

  11. This makes absolutely no sense... First off, Vegeta didn't go on a "rant" after being covered in ink, he got infuriated by how he was now covered in a disgusting slime and was powering up from the anger; it has nothing to do with the color of the ink. Second off, you mention how Mr. Popo translates to "Mr. Evil" which is completely wrong, I don't know where you got that from, he was a mentor to Goku. Third off, there hasn't been any racist jokes in the Dragon Ball franchise since DBZ. Yes, the racial references in the old Dragon Ball episodes were blatantly racist and hugely insensitive, but looking for some sort of "hidden racism" in the new episodes is pretty fucking stupid, especially since anything like that wouldn't dream of not being censored in the states.

  12. Great article man, those unknown comment people are a bunch of internet pussies. Never would they say any of that to a black man in real life, but somehow they are so brave on the internet. Great Article, great points, i already don't watch DB Super cause i know it's trash.

    1. Lol, I like how you insult the "unknow comment people", when you ARE one, yourself. I left a comment here awhile ago and I myself am black, grow up and learn what this article is criticizing. Here's the clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypDr99wt_sM And if you still think that's racist, you really are nothing more than some white person trying to get "points" with the Black community by pretending to get offended by random shit.

  15. What you say is actually racist, as being racist and sexist is a integral part of japanese culture, and by insulting it you are actually being racist against japanese.
