Xbox One Negative Feedback helps Sony Prosper

According to gamespot.com, "The backlash surrounding Microsoft's controversial (and since-reversed) DRM policies was a "very useful source" for Sony in its PlayStation 4 marketing planning, Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida said in the latest issue of Famitsu (via Polygon).
"There were lots of people who gave their opinions on that issue to my Twitter account before E3," Yoshida said. "It's not that our hardware policies are decided strictly based on user reaction like this, but when we were thinking about what we had to bring across and how to bring it across, it was a very useful source."
Sony capped of its E3 2013 briefing earlier this month by declaring that the PS4 would play used games without limitations and would not require an Internet connection. This announcement, from SCEA CEO Jack Tretton, drew a rousing applause at the time.
SCE Japan Asia president Hiroshi Kawano further explained in Famitsu that the response to the PS4 has been positive all round--from consumers to developers.
"As of now, I feel like we're getting a very positive response. For this system, we made a list of what people expected from us, debating over each point, with user feedback forming the main basis for the list," Kawano said. "The software makers are also telling us that they feel like they really make some fun stuff with it. A new platform always provides the basis for new forms of play, so I'd like to see it connect to a revitalization of the marketplace."
Kawano also addressed PS4 pricing for Japan, saying this information will come during a "full announcement" sometime in the future. Elsewhere around the world, the PS4 will retail for $399/€399/ £349.

State of Decay Update

The phenomenial hit state of decay has final been approved for its first update.  The update is a whopping 60mb+

The first question I had when I download it was what did the download do?  Multiple sites said the download fixed bugs and repeatative dialogue, but I still get the bugs: such as zombies trapped understairs, "I killed your pony after it tried to eat me" quote, and getting stuck in the walls.

I play the game and damn...it still has problems walking on the sidewalks.  I hate that you can't save your npc's when their in trouble.  Nothing worse than spending 14 hours leveling up and you see that character die from being eaten by 2 regular zombies.

I know one time I saw my npc running into a horde.  I hauled ass and killed the horde.  Then, a swat zombie spawned.  I killed it. Then  feral zombie spawned, it nearly killed me.  Then the big-uh spawned still killed it. Then 2 regular zombies seemed immuned to melee and dodged bullets like the matrix.  End of my character and the npc.  Bullshit!  Developers need to fix that.

Xbox Live fixed and restored

If you have had difficulty staying signed on to your xbox live account, then it was not just your console. According to gamespot.com:

[UPDATE] Microsoft issued a statement on the outage to GameSpot, explaining "networking changes" resulted in a connectivity error, which has since been fixed.
"At 10:50 a.m. PDT today, the Xbox Live Services team was making some networking changes that resulted in a connectivity error for all users in accessing Xbox Live and Xbox.com. Our engineering teams quickly reversed the change and all systems are restored," Microsoft said.
The original story is below.
Xbox Live and Xbox.com are currently offline, though it is unclear why.
"We have run into an issue with the Xbox Live service, and are currently investigating. Stay tuned for status updates," the official Xbox support Twitter account wrote minutes ago.
The official Xbox Live Status Page  currently states that users may experience difficulties signing into Xbox Live and other general Xbox Live connectivity issues affecting both the Xbox 360 and Xbox.com
"Uh oh! You tried to sign in to Xbox Live and it didn't work? We have our top engineers working on this. Please check back for an update in 30 minutes," the company said.

State of Decay Review

State of Decay is an arcade game on Xbox live marketplace selling for 1600 microsoft points or $20 that I say is worth a buy.  The game has sold 500,000 copies in two weeks and has become microsoft arcade fastest selling game of all time.

State of Decay by Undead Labs throws you in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. The main goal of the game is keeping your base alive: setting up outpost and parameters in order to make sure you get the resources necessary to survive.  You spent the game searching houses for resources so that the base can survive and upgrade the base.  You can have watch towers, medical bays, gyms for training, beds to get rest, and kitchens to sleep.

One thing I admire about the game is that you can switch between characters when another character gets tired.  There is an emphasis on how survivors interact with each other, and makes a valid point that good team dynamics are vital to survival.

Each character has plot driven stats. A player that is a athlete will have good leadership attributes and player that is a day dreamer will have high intelligence attributes.  The game is good at generating action based events with characters such as a character getting getting angry with your decision, so the two of you have to go let off some stem by taking out a horde of zombies.  These events add to the cohesion of the base itself. The intermingling of the dynamics of the character interactions on the base and missions of the game gel well together.

You can gain neighbors trust and create alliances where you share supplies and help each other out when in trouble.  With the supplies you have a barter honor system called influence.  You have points for each item given and taken from inventory.

Combat is simple its a mix of melee and third person shooting.  Weapons degrade with use.  Knowing which weapon to use will be key in some parts of the game.  Using a suppressor with guns will be the difference between alerting a horde and killing a single enemy.

Some of the negatives are an over-sight that can be tolerate.  Like most xbox games, driving is poor at best.  No game seems to get the driving aspects right since GTA.  In State of Decay, cars do not re-spawn.  Collision detection and the A.I. is poorly designed.  Sometimes you'll see a zombie or playable character get stuck on objects or hit invisible walls.  Zombies can hear you easily so sneaking around is ineffective due to glitches. Some of the camera work and sight lines are not idea, particularly when you are being attacked.

State of Decay is an ambitious game that tried to do a lot with a worn out zombie horror genre. It's rough around the edges, but the ideas State of Decay present are good.  Being able to make due with what you have and who is available is the best part of this game.  Sometimes when favorite players are tired you are forced to used the character that available and that adds to the difficulty due to their lack of skills. It's not quite there, but good enough to try.  With some patches and more content, the game can be a better bargain. Undead labs said that an update to the game is coming by the end of summer as soon as Microsoft gives their update certification.

Overall, for the effort and price, I give State of Decay 7/10.

Dead Rising 3

Capcom announced that Dead Rising 3 is not a rumor and has a game ready for gamers.  Dead rising 3 will take place 10 years after the events of dead rising 2.

Dead Rising 3 follows new protagonist Nick Ramos and his attempt to survive a massive zombie outbreak in the fictional city of Los Perdidos, California.  Unlike previous Dead Rising installments, which took place in a relatively contained mall setting, Dead Rising 3 is set in a vast, open world city environment which is reportedly larger than the worlds of dead rising 1 & 2 combined.

Similar to Dead Rising 2, players will have the ability to craft and customize weapons. Driving vehicles will be "a critical part of exploration" as players travel around Los Perdidos and scavenge for items. Dead Rising 3 will also utilize the Xbox Smartglass, allowing players to call in air strikes on hordes of zombies.

Capcom hasn't named an official release date, but plans for a late fall 2013 launch.

Microsoft ends the Microsoft Points System

Microsoft's confirmed at 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo that it will end the Microsoft points system once the Xbox one is launched.

According to gamestop.com Microsoft points have been in place since the inception of Xbox Live and have not been without criticism. Rather than using real-world currency, Microsoft has adopted its own system, where 400 Microsoft points is equivalent to $5. Further, Microsoft sells point packs only in multiples of 400, often leaving gamers with excess points after purchasing content they want.

I'm glad I never really got caught up with buy points.  I signed up for surveys to earn points but I never got any.  Some games on the arcade

Sony PS4 takes a cheap shot at Microsoft Xbox one

According to gamespot.com Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation 4 will not require an online-check in, and that Sony will impose no restrictions on trading in disc-based games.

Speaking during Sony's E3 2013 press conference, SCEA president Jack Tretton added that that disc-based PlayStation 4 games will be able to be traded in at retail, sold to another person, lent to friends, or just kept forever.
The news positions Sony's PlayStation 4 in direct opposition to Microsoft's Xbox One, which requires a 24-hour check-in for all games and will restrict the sale of used games to selected retailers.
"I guess that's a good thing," said Tretton.

Microsoft confirms Xbox One Shortcomings and Scandals

If you're like me, your debating which system you want to put money in.  Like many americans that like hardcore gaming, Xbox is the first choice but after hearing what is in store for you as a consumer, you might want to see what the PS4 will offer once you read how greedy Microsoft is getting.

According to Forbes.com "Gamers were worried about used game restrictions, online requirements, and privacy issues.  It confirmed that the console will need to be connected to the internet once every 24 hours in order to function, making life very difficult for gamers with an unstable internet connection, and near-impossible for most soldiers. There will be restrictions on how you can loan games, and while you can still give games to your friends, each game can only be given once.

Used games can be sold at retail stores only with the publisher’s permission.
We also learned that you can share games with your Xbox “family” of up to ten people, which is actually kind of cool. We also learned that the Kinect camera can be turned off, so it’s not as creepy as it could have been."

So basically, Microsoft has confirmed that it will not allow used games, a limit on game sharing and you cannot play games without an internet connect to its exclusive Xbox live internet membership.

That's going to kill the game rental industry like gamefly and red box.  Also, may affect being able to buy games online like amazon if it doesn't come from the publisher.  Also, no offline play.  Wow! Playstation 4 is going to clean up off Xbox greed.
