I'm a big fan of the ABFF Saturdays on Aspire Network where our eyes receive a feast of imaginary and outstanding acting from some of the undiscovered talent in the Black Community. I recently saw a film called "Next Door's Next" which I felt was a great 5 minute film you can't miss.
"Next Doors Next" featured a young black couple that were doing the normal things that a couple do accept with a few vices. The husband was a smoker, and the wife was a baker that didn't realize her talent. The couple pays their older neighbor a social/get to know you better visit, and that visit results in a life changing experience.
A lot of metaphors, foreshadowing, motifs, and symbolism go on in the film's through the directing. My keen eye put 2 and 2 together, and I figured out that the older woman is in fact the younger woman because they have the same matching scar. It's a motif of the director she calls "the pasts meets the present". During the social gathering we learn the purpose of the social gathering.
The woman mentioned her family lived in their house before them. The young couple said that the Asian owners stated no one but them lived in the home prior to the young couple purchasing the home. The older woman details that she loved to cook and will open a bakery and pass the business to their children. Also, the older woman gives her husband a warning he will die from lung cancer.
The couple leaves the older woman's home enlightened. As the couple walks on the street towards home, the young man reaches in his pocket and get his cigarette lighter. Instead of smoking, the young man throws the lighter away meaning he changed his future. The movie ends there. It was a short 5 minute film but a powerful film.
