Review: Rage plus an easter egg from AMC's Breaking Bad

The media hype surrounding Rage had every gamer tv show and magazine calling it the game of the year before it hit the shelves.  Now that it is out lets see if Rage pioneered the world of gaming or added to the bin of wash-ups that did not live up to the hype.

In Rage's story, the Apophis asteroid strikes on August 23, 2029, and the few pockets of survivors are forced to begin a new civilization. The world is populated by human survivors of the impact, who have come together to form settlements around oases and other practical or habitable locations, including racetracks. These fragile homes are diligently defended by the inhabitants against bandits and mutants, which are divided into various gangs and organizations of their own.

The 12 hour main storyline mode consist of a vault survivor of a post apocalypic disaster seems like a knock off of Fallout.  None of the tasks are novel.  The story does do much and fails to deliver a conclusion.  The narratives seem to just string you along or ferry you from one combat zone to the next.

Visualy, Rage is unrivaled.  Detail is packed in every inch of the world with animations in effects that make the game seem more intriguing to play.  Combat is unprecedented with increasing challenge from each enemy.  As the difficulty increase, you need to switch bullet types and upgrade to customize weapons to overcome the obstacles of the wasteland.

Rage has two multiplayer modes: Road Rage and Legends of the Wasteland. In Road Rage, up to four players compete in a free-for-all match that takes place in an arena designed to make use of the vehicles. The objective is to collect rally points that appear around the arena while killing your opponents and stealing their points. Legends of the Wasteland is a series of two-player co-op missions based on stories that are heard throughout the single player campaign. There are a total of 9 objectives in this game type.

A side note to Rage that it was featured on amc hit show Breaking Bad.  If you go to the sheriff office, search the shelf you'll see the grill encased in glass from a character of the tv show with his name on it.

Rage did the job by most standards and brought a new shooter that with more polishing and better story and content development, could be just as good as GOW or COD.  Rage is not a revolutionary game, but it will satisfy the average gamer with a challenge and some fun.  Hivegaming give it 8.0 out of 10.
