Review: Dragon Ball Z Ultimate Tenkaichi

If you are a fan like me, then you have been following with a great deal of energy and effort, Dragon Ball Z  Ultimate Tenkaichi release.  I won't leave you waiting, here is my review of the best DBZ game ever to hit a console.

Goku, Piccolo, Gohan, Trunks, Brolly, Frieza, Buu and all of our favorite heroes and villians have returned from the DBZ tv show and movies to create an exciting adventure, and guide a new generation of Z fighters towards the road to legendary status.

This game is loaded with content. There are points in the game where you fight the giant ape form of Vegeta and track down Gohan and Krillin with a scouter as Frieza.  Dragon Ball Z  Ultimate Tenkaichi features a single player adventure that spans the entire DBZ series from the first battle with Raditz on earth to the epic fight with buu in the heavens.  Dragon Ball Z  Ultimate Tenkaichi made sure fans of the series got exactly what they wanted to see and more.

A bonus to Dragon Ball Z  Ultimate Tenkaichi is the Hero Mode with the ability to create your own character and an original storyline for your character  to find the dragon balls while fighting along side Goku and the Z fighters.  In addition developers went out of their way to create earth shattering recreations of the best attacks like Goku's super kamehameha, Vegeta's big bang attack, and Piccolo's special beam cannon look better than even and capture the planetary damage and destructive force that we came to love on the show. You can leave holes in the environment with your attacks!

The down side to Dragon Ball Z  Ultimate Tenkaichi is the emphasis on rpg leveling up, and loading times.  Walls of text and long cut scenes with vital information sometimes leave you waiting long times for something to happen, but the history of DBZ is why you play the game anyway right. The underlining mechanics need a bit of work because of the limited number options and shallow progression. Ultimately, the games does not convey a rewarding sense of growth for your efforts.

The presentation is superb.  The energy blast and animation are better than any other DBZ game and tends to play out with timed button commands. The combat system captures the content and look of the anime it is based off of, but other then that, it is no more than a button mashing free for all, and often a game of chance especially when you pit your player against other players online.

It's scripted and formulated, but it's fun.  It's packed with content, and a great tribute to the Dragon Ball franchise.  Some sacrifices were made such as a lack of depth and complexity that you'd find in other fighting games like DOA or Street Fighter.  Overlooking all that, hivegaming gives Dragon Ball Z  Ultimate Tenkaichi  an 8.0 out 10.
